Esso Chile Bell
This is the bell from the Esso Chile that was recently given to me by the North Myrtle Beach Police Department. They have had the bell in their office for as long as 20 years but are not aware of how it ended up there. They decided to do some research to see what they could learn out about it and found this site. When they found out the significance of the Esso Chile bell, they contacted me via e-mail and very kindly donated the bell to me.
The Esso Chile was my father’s first command and one that he always remembered fondly. He first joined her in 1957 as Chief Mate at the shipyard where she was built, and later became her Captain in March of 1958. I was born in 1957 just a couple of months after he joined her.
I would like to thank Vant Abercrombie (pictured) and Paul Sheets for reaching out to me, donating and shipping the bell to me. This ship was close to my father’s heart and he always kept a picture of her on his desk. It means a lot to me to have a part of her that I can look to when I want to feel near to him. This was a great and unexpected present that i will cherish.
